Ion-exchange resins have been used since the 1950s to measure soil nutrient bioavailability in research labs (Skogley and Dobermann, 1996; Qian and Schoenau, 2002). However, ion-exchange resins were not used routinely for soil analysis in North America until 1997, when Western Ag commercialized a resin membrane technology developed at the University of Saskatchewan. We present some of the characteristics of this technology and how it was developed to improve nutrient management decisions by crop producers in western Canada.
